Our continuous improvement ethos at the THSG is something we work towards with every pupil, team and group within our coaching program. Its an ethos that doesn’t have a time frame or an end goal and is sometimes hard to measure. Its an ongoing effort to improve in each practice session, in every game and learn from every shot. I strongly believe that in our teams this year we have seen that continuous improvement and those marginal gains of improvement shine through. Its been a record breaking year for the club winning 5 of the major county trophies up for grabs.

The Mens A Team after being promoted up into the top division faced a hard task at the start of the season. Facing teams like Forest Hills, Minchinhampton, Cotswold Hills and Stinchcombe surely we were going to struggle just to stay up……Not a chance, from the first game we showed the league that we weren’t just their to make up the numbers…..Our ‘Welsh Wizard’ captain Neil Lancett studied form and went about partnering up his team, he wanted continuity, gritty partnerships and determined golfers. He got that from every player and instilled a positive team ethos that helped them win the league. Junior golfers that had come through our development program played in their first matches and recorded some of the highest win rates of the team. All in all an unbelievable season for our A team!!

The Ladies A Team didn’t want to be left out either!! Captain Jan Armstrong put together her strongest team to date, just showing the strength of our ladies section here at the club. Our ladies showed similar qualities throughout the season, hard to break down at home, showing strength in depth and gritty performances away from home!! They like the men came away with the league title for the first time ever. Congratulations Ladies.

Neil Lancett once again captained the NGFL Cup team which consisted of mix of handicap players. The NGFL cup is thought of as one of the most closely fought out cups in the county. To add to the difficulty ROWGC were looking to retain the trophy after a successful win last year. Our ‘Welsh Wizard’ was once again weaving his magic with the team, threading in juniors to an already strong outfit. After an awesome team performance our guys managed to retain the cup and cap off what has been an unforgettable season.

Now onto our Juniors….what can i say, it fills me with pride writing about the successes of these young golfers. We have been lucky enough to help these kids hit their first shots in golf and help them develop into huge potentials for the future. Our academy juniors entered the county Golf Sixes initiative run by the Golf Foundation. Some of the kids had never played in a competition before and didn’t have handicaps, this format allowed them to dip their toes into a fun texas scramble format playing against other clubs in the county. They played in 6 round robin matches winning 4 of the by some margin. They were a credit to the club playing their games in the right spirit, having lots of fun and laughter together!!

And now to our older Juniors…..they certainly have had a season to remember. They seem to spotted on more and more honours boards in the clubhouse, playing in the various winning teams and successfuly representing the club at county level. Earlier in the season Junior captain Liam Greig was part of the winning team at the Gloucestershire team championships. The winning team consisted of Harry Griffiths and Cam Haines. They then went onto play in the national team championships hosted by England Golf, they managed a top ten finish with fine performances against clubs with high handicaps!! Congratulations Liam and all the Juniors….

In such an individual sport its often very difficult to bring together winnings teams. For me this is what makes these times so special at the club. Congratulations to all members for their winning ways during team matches this year.

Looking forward to 2019, if you would like to be part of any of the teams at the club, please don’t hesitate to contact us in the professional shop.
