Zach's Performance Clinics

NEW FOR 2021……..>

Zach’s performance clinics will be all on course looking at different ways to improve your score on the course. Zach will use his previous experience and knowledge at breaking down how to tackle a hole to get the best possible score. Zach will use potentially different ways of looking at a shot that you may not have thought of before to break through some of your scoring barriers and get the best scores you have had.

Friday 23rd April: 6pm-7.30pm

This session we will look at the importance of tee shots.

This will be looking into how to approach what club to take off the tee depending on the hole and conditions we face. Where we should tee the ball up on the tee area depending on the hole, wind and our shot trajectory. How to identify dangers on the hole and play away from the trouble. How to pick confident target lines and commit to our shot!

BOOK HERE

Saturday 24th April 5pm-6.30pm

This session we will look at approach shots.

We will identify important areas with shots into the green. Identify our target line into greens depending on our club, distance from the hole and our dispersion with that club. This is often overlooked and can really change how we approach that shot. We will also give you real life examples and delve into how the very best golfers play from differing lies out on the course.

BOOK HERE

Thursday 29th April 6pm-7.30pm

This session will look at how to calculate a ‘playing’ yardage.

We will look at a step by step guide just like tour professionals use to work out how far the shot is playing and the shot needed to get the best result. We will look at how different scenarios and conditions affect the ‘playing’ yardage of the shot and how we can play or not play a certain shot because of the environment.

BOOK HERE

Friday 30th April 6pm-7.30pm

This session we will look at green side shots and how to play to our percentages.

We will look at varying lies and different scenarios on the course and talk through what shots we can play to get the ball closer to the hole. We will talk through what shots we can play and potentially new techniques to play different shots and get better results

BOOK HERE

Each session will be followed by refreshments back at the pro shop with a debrief from Zach. Start your improvement program today and don’t wait to be great…!

Pro Career Beckons for Niall

We have all followed Niall’s career from watching him play as a junior to now taking his first steps into the professional ranks. Personally it’s been an amazing journey for me watching him develop both on and off the golf course. His hard work and determination to be better each day is what sets him apart from the rest. I have know doubt over the next 5 years of his life he will put 110% in being better each day.

Niall starts his journey on the up and coming Clutch pro tour which is a UK wide tour with 25+ events. They are a forward thinking tour with lots of new ideas for tournaments including amateurs, juniors and touring professionals.

As he embarks on his new career the excitement builds with his second tournament at the prestigious Princes Golf Club, Kent. He has been working hard over the last few months maintaining his fitness and mental well being. He has also been working for the greens team earning money to fund his dream.

Niall is actively looking for sponsors and has written up proposals for anyone who is interested in helping him out during his journey. The average tournament is around £300-£400 in entry and expenses, he is looking to play around 20 tournaments this year. Lockdown 2.0 Webinars With The THSG

Dear Golfer

Welcome to our new and exclusive 3 week plan that is guaranteed to help you with your game and come out of this lockdown a better player.

Let’s be honest, lockdown 2.0 is far from ideal and will effect us all one way or the other. I sincerely hope you and your loved ones stay safe and well in this funny world we currently live in.

We all are going to miss our golf, but I strongly believe that we can help you all improve through this very tough period. Who would love to hear Zach talk us through each step of the Welsh Amateur in 2016, when it went down tot he wire and he took the win? Who would like to hear Oli’s story caddying on the ladies european tour for Becky Morgan and hear her process for every shot? Who would like to hear the story of when Zach played with John Rahm and what he had to say when Zach outdrove him on one hole? How about what Dame Laura Davies said to Oli when Becky was going through one of his demanding putting performance drills

Each session is £10 per household and will be conducted on the familiar online platform Zoom. After each session you will receive notes on all topics covered and we are offering a THSG lesson promo special to those attended - a 20% off lesson voucher to be used December to February.

Here is our all new and exclusive to THSG pupils 3 week Lockdown 2.0 learning programme.

Friday 13th and Saturday 14th - 2pm - Indoor putting and Garden chipping made fun

Learn Oli’s 5 favourite indoor putting drills and Zach’s 5 favourite chipping drills to perform over the next 4 weeks to tighten up your short game. Without doubt, 20 mins of practice per day will help you reduce your handicap index!

Friday 20th and Saturday 21st - 2pm - How to think better on the golf course.

Oli and Zach will talk you through what they have learnt from coaching European tour winners and from there own experiences competing at the top level of the game.

Friday 27th and Saturday 28th - 2pm

Putting - Set up well to hole more putts. Wedges - know your wedge distances and how to adjust

The set up in putting is a key foundation to holing more putts, dont stand poorly and limit your results.

Zach will talk you through the best way to work out how far you hit your wedges and show you how to adjust to fill in all those crucial gaps.

Zach Settles Into New Position

Zach Settles Into New Position

Its been a whirlwind couple of months for our new PGA Professional Zach Galliford. Joining us from Royal St Davids GC Zac brings a wealth of experience in custom fitting and coaching.

Zac had this say regarding his first couple of months with us -

My first couple of months as PGA Professional at Ross on Wye GC could not have gone better. I’ve had a very warm welcome from the THSG Team, the members and visitors at Ross on Wye GC and already feel at home. It has been great to work with such a proactive professional team with a passion of helping golfers of all ages to achieve their goals socially and competitively. Being a part of a busy and thriving membership will give me the opportunity to develop my skills and experience as a PGA Professional.

Previously, I have been an Assistant professional at Royal St. David’s GC in Harlech, North Wales from July 2019 which has enabled me to learn first-hand the role of a PGA Professional. I have also been fortunate enough to compete at the highest level of amateur golf nationally and internationally, travelling all over the world playing against the best players in the world including the likes of Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele and Matthew Fitzpatrick. I have represented Wales at all age groups and my biggest win to date was capturing the Welsh Amateur Championship in 2016.

Learning from such experienced individuals of the THSG team, who specialise in all aspects of the game of golf will help me to develop as a person and as a professional. I have a keen interest in on course coaching and custom fitting to help players get the most out of their game. If you would like to get a lesson or custom fitting, please come into the shop or call and we can arrange a time to improve your golf.

Zach’s passion in the game is easy to see and hes been a credit to the team during these busy times. If you haven’t met Zach as yet, please pop along to the pro shop and book in for a game with him or even better book in for a lesson.

ROWGC Finals Day 2020

Congratulations to all finals day players, it was another fantastic day for the club with some great golf on display. This really is the pinnacle day for any ROWGC member and to reach the finals is a huge achievement in itself.

The winners of the competitions were as follows ...

CompetitionWinner(s)

Mens Club Championship - Cameron Haines
Ladies Club Championship - Rhian McGinley
Ladies Bronze Scratch Cup - Pam Duke
Ladies 18 Hole Knockout - Ruth Kirchmeier
Huggett Putter - June Savidge
Yates Cup - David Warwick
Len Weston Trophy - Steve Woods
Trevor Lane Cup - David Warwick
Hospital Cup - Paul Warwick
Harold Bradley Cup - Andrew Reeves
Cinderford Cup - Richard Moore & Jason Gale

Congratulations to all the winners and obvious commiserations to all those who came so close but lost in their respective finals.

A number of competitions were unable to be decided on Saturday and the winners of these will be emailed out as soon as they have all been completed.

ROWGC Press Officer Keith Ray has already written the report on the mens final which i have included below. The ladies final report will feature in next weeks newsletter.

'Cam & Tim Make Worthy Finalists'

It reflected well on the Ross Club's Competitions Committee combined with the 'collective spirit' of members from all sections, that the pandemic did not prevent the traditional Annual Knock-Out Finals Day of matches from taking place. Social distancing regulations in place did mean however that the Trophy Presentation evening which in normal times completes a marvellous occasion had to wait for another day.

As customary there were some intriguing contests for members to savour with the 36 holes men's singles final to decide the 2020 Men Club Champion bringing together two in-form players in 20 years old reigning Champion Cam Haines, a scratch handicap player and 4 handicapper Tim Wyatt. However, Tim is no stranger to major honours board successes winning a hat-full in his 2012 season and he added to his collection only recently when he won the Winston Wildsmith Salver in which 136 members took part.

While most of their morning 18 holes session promised a close match, in his winning 3 of the last 6 holes, Cam was best placed to enjoy his lunch break being 4 holes up at the half-way stage. The afternoon round saw Cam make a blistering start with 2 birdies in the first 3 holes and after 27 holes he stood on the verge of victory. Cam and Tim ultimately exchanged acknowledgements on the 11th green enabling Cam to celebrate his 3rd Ross Club Men Champion status in the past 4 years. For Cam, a former Ross Juniors Captain, he is a real credit to the Gorsley based Club and to himself and can reflect upon an ongoing highly meaningful golfing career since he joined in 2014 as a 16 handicapper. In this respect Cam will point to being in the care of the Ross Club's Head Professional Tim Hall and his School of Golf Academy team and their 'continuous improvement' culture as having provided the key ingredients.

In the final of the Harold Bradley Cup, affectionately known as the Rabbits Cup being for players with handicaps 18+ Andrew Reeves found himself competing against a newcomer in Joe Hiram. Joe has enjoyed an impressive first season with the Ross Club including being runner-up with 40 points in his inaugural competitive seniors stableford event in June, shortly after 'Project restart' in which 137 players took part. With both Andrew and Joe sporting 20 handicaps the scene was set for a good tussle although on the day it was Andrew who enjoyed his first taste of silverware with a 4/3 victory. Like Club Champion Cam Haines, it was typical of Andrew to graciously dedicate his success to the short-game learning he has received from Tim Hall's School of Golf team and in particular Oli Leett, their specialized Aimpoint Level 3 Putting coach who is highly rated nationally within the industry.

Week 3 - Strike it Right

Oli will be once again delving into crucial impact factors that will help you hole more putts. A player that struggles with strike location on the face is a player that will struggle with starting the ball on line and distance control.
In this session I will enhance your awareness on where you are hitting the ball on the face and give you 2 great drills that we will go through live on the call.

Equipment needed -
1 x bath towel
2 x balls
2 x cups
2 x tees
And either elastic bands, hair bands or blue tack

I will be covering the scoring zone and following on from our previous webinars on chipping. We are moving further away from the green now and covering the scoring zone - 40yards-100yards. We will cover the key principles to becoming a better wedge player, looking at set-up changes and distance control. We will look at why the best players in the world make it look so easy and how we can relate this to the amateur game.

THSG Isolation Webinars

Calling All THSG Pupils ......

We should be well into our isolation improvement program by now, our weekly webinars are the perfect excuse to get away from work for an hour or that long list of chores!! Either way your golf needs you right now and this is the perfect opportunity to bring improvement and change into your golf game.

These fun and engaging webinars are brought to you to help you practice and improve while in isolation. We understand these are difficult times for so many reasons and what better way to fill your days improving your golf game.

These educational webinars will be on an app called Zoom which you can download either on your iPhone, android phone, iPad or desktop computer. We understand not everyone is so techy so if you need any help with downloading the app or software we will do our best remotely to help. The webinars can be as engaging an active as you want, you can be set up in the garden practicing while we are taking you through certain aspects of technique or you can just be sat in the comfort or your arm chair taking notes. We will actually send on our notes/pictures from the session and will be in contact before to make sure your all ok with the app. We want the webinars to be as social as we can so we would love to hear all your questions before, during and after the session.....after all we are here to help.

General tips for Zoom -

* Make sure you have good wifi or 4G if your outside.

* Make sure you have good battery life as it tends to use up a lot of life while on the call.

* Have your golf balls and clubs at the ready if your wanting to be active during the call. Also if you are wanting to practice during the call communicate with the THSG to gain an equipment list before each session.

* Notebook and pen aren't essential because you will have the teaching notes sent to you, but you may want to write extra notes during the call.

Week 2 - Short Game Aim & Start Line

Such a simple but overlooked area of technique. In Oli's putting 30mins he will be covering the importance and give you a strategy for aiming correctly. If your clubface is 1 degree left or right of the centre of the cup from 10ft you will miss the hole. Yes putting is hard... So it’s extremely important to Aim like a laser. In this online session we will talk through how you can change your perceptional aim at set up and a strategy on the best way to set up. Along with the best drill to dial in at home.

In my 30mins I will be talking about how getting creative in your garden can home your skills and help create a more rounded short game. This will be a practical session for me so by all means get your wedge out and give it a go in your garden. I will be demonstrating controlling trajectory through a number of ways including my ladder drill. I will also touch on the importance of aim and start line for chipping.

March Group Clinics

March is the perfect month to PLAN, ACT and REVIEW your game. Strengths and Weaknesses, what part of the game is letting you down ?? Whats going to make the biggest difference heading into the 2020 summer golfing season. Dont keep putting your improvement off, your improvement plan needs to start in March if you haven’t done so already.

Group sessions are a great way to learn with link minded golfers in an interactive environment. We cover all areas and especially through March with some new look sessions.

This is the perfect time of year to work on your game away from competitive competitions. Investing time into your game in the off season will allow you to improve, change patterns and look forward to hitting your goals in 2020.

Sunday 8th March - 11am-12noon - Unlock The Power In 2020

Venue - Range / Driver & Tees

Our game is changing and we are heading into a new era of golfer on the PGA tour, 300+yards is now the norm on the tour but what can we learn from how they do it. We have never before known as much as we know about driver the ball further. Key moves and key positions are a must when trying to gain distance, during this sessions we will pick out and implement these key areas of the swing.

Monday 9th March 11-30am-12-30pm - How To Make 2020 The Best Ball Striking Year Ever!

Venue - Driving Range / 9,8,7 & 6 iron

Approach play is certainly a key area of the game when we are talking about lowering scores. The importance of a centr’d strike is really what the game is all about and without this, we can’t control the desired result of any shot. We will cover the key fundamentals of better ball striking and delve into what we see in the worlds greatest ball strikers.

Saturday 21st March - 2pm-3pm - Become Your Own Golf Detective

Venue - Range - ALL CLUBS

A golfer that understands IMPACT and the various impact factors that effect the end result of a golf shot is a golfer that can make change in their game. Whether or not its a short chip or a driver off the tee a more educated golfing mind can help aid the road to improvement and enhance change. This could be the most important group clinic ever attended and certainly will get the cogs turning on improving all areas of the game.

Sunday 22nd March 12-30pm-1-30pm - Pitch It Like The Pro’s

Venue - Driving Range / 9,PW,SW,LW

Distance wedges is often overlooked in practice but is an area i get asked about all the time. During this session we will cover distance control and give you a system that suits your game, we will delve into the importance of set-up and the key roles they play in controlling shot trajectory. We will also touch on the basic swing principles that we look for in this unique stye of shot.

Friday 27th March 4pm-5pm - Turn Bogeys Into Pars

Venue - ON Course - ALL Clubs

Some of the best players i have been lucky enough to play with and coach over the years have had some of best scrambling powers i have seen. So much truth in the saying “Theirs no pictures on the scorecard”…!! The ability to scramble well is a skill that can be taught with the right mindset and a good practice regime the possibilities are endless…!!

Sunday 29th March 2pm-3pm - Bunker Basics
Venue -SHORT GAME AREA / PW, SW & LW

We strongly believe here at the THSG if you can conquer your bunker play woes then you can become a better player in short game full stop!! Understanding the science behind impact and the factors that help us hit these shots close is key and will be covered during this masterclass. We will cover all shots from high soft spinners too low runners.
